MacCamp a giant success

MACCABI Youth – a branch of Maccabi NSW – held its first residential camp over the recent Pesach break, which allowed dozens of participants in year 8 to take part in sport and recreational activities.

The four-day MacCamp on the banks of Lake Macquarie allowed leaders to instil the values on which the four pillars of Maccabi Youth – Sport, Judaism, Leadership and Identity – are built.

“Our objective was to use the camp as a starting point for more residential camps,” co-organiser Yoni Hochberg said.

“We had a blank canvas to work with, as Maccabi Youth does not have the history other youth movements have, and with its focus on community and leadership, it offers a real alternative to other offerings.

“We believe that Maccabi Youth and Maccabi in general, can be an important conduit between the kids and the Jewish community.”

Participants took part in adventure activities such as canoeing, rock climbing, a high ropes course and sailing, before letting their hair down at night with a water balloon and shaving cream fight, trivia night and a game of celebrity heads.

“The camp was made easy by a number of factors,” fellow organiser Shayna Levitt said.

“The great bunch of kids, strong leadership training through Maccabi Youth, great weather, brilliant food, and the strong support of Maccabi NSW.”

“We hope to develop the next generation of leaders for Maccabi in an environment that is non-threatening and fun, and which allows them to build their confidence in themselves and in working with others in a team.”

Maccabi will hold its next residential camp in October aimed at year 9 participants.
